KD Mac9 Designs

i should have credited Kristen Dillon for the above image of Meeka.  here is an original photo before KD added her magic touch!
i should also mention that the appendage you see creeping over Meeka's head is a tail originating where a tail should.  it is not, in fact, growing out of Meeka's head, or a phallic symbol of any sort.  it's a tail.

meeka

i think about this strange little creature every day, so i am very surprised that i have waited so long to write about her/him/it...
i made this one while i was living in Tofino, BC.  i wish i had kept it for myself, but it was sold to someone who may or may not share my obsession.
i'm not exactly sure what it is about it that i love so much.  the crooked mouth, the jagged teeth, the teeny legs supporting the mishapen, pudgy body...
it never ocurred to me that people would be confused about what it was.  who cares what it is, it's awesome!

the photo says Pamela, but
i have named it Meeka, after my dog Mika.  they are both ridiculous and i love them.

"9"

i made a few of these creepy dolls about 2 years ago.  i'm not sure what possessed me, but i love them.  they have barbie arms and legs and are completely useless, except for making me laugh.
anyway, i recently watched Tim Burton's latest animation film, '9' and the puppets in this movie remind me of my creepy dolls.  of course, his are dripping with personality and purpose.

this white one now lives with my friend Lindy.

Johan!

i made this cat for Johan.  when he(Johan), came over to pick it up, we took it outside to take photos of it.  it's eyes weren't squinted when i made it...  CREEPY.

Reef Glider and friend

A week or so ago, i wrote about this fish i made called a 'reef glider.'  I included a vector image, but just found a photo of the original.  My photos are horrendous, but here it is anyway.  I had forgotten about this strange looking creature crawling on it's back too.  They didn't go as a set, they were just hanging out together the day i took the picture.

lady lamp

i made this lamp for one of my favorite people in the world, Lara Cooney.  As a matter of fact, i believe Lara's boyfriend Dustin, is the mastermind behind the name 'Paper Machete'

the giant foot holding Lara's lamp is courtesy of a paper machete chicken i once made.  i had to amputate one of the chickens legs to make room for the cow leg i replaced it with.  I think the spare foot was put to good use.

if anyone has lamps they want to get rid of, or turned into something else and returned, call me!

J.J.

This is a night-light i made for my niece, Julia Jane.  She(the night-light), is aptly named J.J.
I was experimenting with a new paper mache paste when i made this one.  When i was finished and adding the final touches on the paint, i accidentally caught the cord with my foot and she dropped off the counter onto her face.  I was devastated!  I was leaving for DC the next morning and the light was to be a x-mas gift for Julia Jane.  There wasn't time for accidents like this.  I picked her up off the floor, expecting the worse, but she was fine!  Her beak was dented a bit, but that's it, easy!
I'm excited to continue working with this clay!!

Tim Burton!

I just got home from the Tim Burton Exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
I have been a fan of Tim Burton since 'Beetlejuice' and a bigger fan of his art since 'The Nightmare Before Christmas,' but i had no idea how extensive his career is.  This exhibit has over 700 drawings, paintings, storyboards, short films(some made when he was just a kid!!!), movies, puppets, costumes, personal letters(hand written!!!!), and so many things i'm forgetting, from his childhood to present day!!  It was so amazing to see his work displayed at once.  His films and cartoons were playing on different televisions everywhere!  Glass cases held the most amazing sculptures of his characters.  The walls were decorated with sculptures, photographs, cartoons, scribbles from when he was a teenager and little stories from when he was a kid, not to mention hundreds of incredible early drawings and concepts....
His love for Vincent Price and creepy clowns??!!!!
His imagination and creativity is  awe-inspiring!!!!!  I could go on and on about everything i haven't mentioned!!!  Truly amazing!  The exhibit runs to April.  I want to see it again!!!!

When i first began selling my paper mache creatures, i  chose "diddle's" as my company name.  I asked my girlfriend Pilar( http://www.planetpili.com/), to create an icon to represent diddle's.  I supplied her with a list of traits that i thought diddle's should posses and she came up with this delicious, devil.  My art has never been described as innocent.

In retrospect, "diddle's" may not have been the best name as it seemed off-putting to many.  It was an innocent name, however,  i have since re-named my company "paper-machete" and am very satisfied.
This one is a "reef glider."  I made this 3 years ago for a dive shop named, Reef Gliders in Roatan, Honduras.  The plan was to mail the Glider to Honduras, but it ended up being quite large so i asked my good friend, and photographer, Chris to take a few photos and play around with the image.  He created this  vector so i sent it and many photos to the dive shop instead.  They seemed happy!

The original reef glider ended up going home with the cutest, older couple from Nashville, Tennessee.  They were driving through Squamish and spotted it, on display, at a cafe.  They had to have it!  Amazing.  Sadly, i didn't get to meet them.

MIA

i can't believe i haven't written a single word since June! here are some excuses...
-i got married on June 30th. his name is Jon and he's a dream!
-Jon and i spent most of July driving around British Columbia, and Alberta.
-i spent the entire month of August in Washington DC, where Jon is from.
-September... i don't have a good excuse for this month.
-October... again, not too certain.  i mean, i'm always doing things, i just haven't writen about them.
-November was spent in California, Hawaii, and two wintery road-trips around BC and Alberta.
-the first part of December was productive as i had a website built by a lovely, and extremely talented girl named Sonya, Sugar Coded Designs ( contact@sugarcoded.tv).  my web address is www.paper-machete.ca.  it's really fun!  the second half of December, is being spent in DC.
-when i make it back to BC mid January, i intend to be more diligent with my posts.
-here's some insight into my life. Jon is from DC and i am from BC, so we have been living much of our relationship apart.  when we are together, certain things, such as blogs, get pushed aside.  having said that, i have had PLENTY of time to do some serious soul-searching as to the future of paper-machete.  i think you're going to start seeing some interesting creations!!

So, if i didn't see it with my own eyes, i wouldn't have believed it either. I followed these two to the park today!!! Meeka (the little red guy), and Roger.
Apparently, this is what they do. Teeter-totter and climbing walls!???
Truly amazing!

This is one of my earliest creations. Her name(s) is Pearl! She is a very elegant, two-headed flamingo. I went through a phase where everything had to have two heads. I miss pearl. I think she lives somewhere in Costa Rica now.

I took some Pinata's to North Arm Farm in Pemberton today. While i was there, i picked my weight in strawberries(not really), and fell in love with the property. Everything organic, everything fabulous!
Jenna Dashney and her partner Max are running the store, as well as creating INCREDIBLE, organic food!!!
If you haven't been there, or if you haven't been there yet this season, then i urge you to go immediately!!!!! Seriously, it's the place to be right now!!!

This pinata is on it's way to ontario for Cameron's birthday party.
I don't know Cameron, but i have been told that he hates the color green.
I'm going to share a secret with you. Underneath the white and black paint, Cameron's pinata has green eyes.
I hope i don't ruin Cameron's birthday.

Sometimes(often), i dress up and have 'family' picture day...

I had originally built this zombi over a floor standing lamp so it had this huge, stupid lamp shade looming over it's head. It was pretty useless as a lamp. Last night i ripped it apart and pulled the lamp out. I think it's way better now.

This is another pinata. Some kind of bug or alien. Not really sure what it is actually, but it was a big hit!!! A BIG HIT!

spiderman!

I like turning boring lamps into not boring lamps.
